ANTI-PARASITE PLAN.
The spring and summer bring us very pleasant months–we all, including parasites, want to be out enjoying the warm weather.
The warmest months are those when we should increase our guard to avoid fleas, ticks and mosquitoes which can affect our pets. Desparasitation consists of stopping contact with the parasite or eliminating it if contact has already been made. Parasites, both internal and external, can have a very negative effect on our pets health and can even be transmitted to humans or other animals.
Currently on the market there are a large number of products specifically to easily treat all parasites. It is important to discuss with the vet which is the most ideal for your cat or dog. Fleas and ticks are the most common parasites that affect pets. They can produce dermatitis, skin infections, allergic reactions and anaemia. Its impact is not just limited to human/animal health but can have economic consequences as well due to subsequent treatments needed.
THE MOST COMMON PARASITES IN DOGS.:
Fleas are the most common and a year round problem. Adults must be eliminated before they lay eggs. They can also infect humans and transmit a certain type of worm and several illnesses to pets.
Ticks are the second most common external parasite. Due to climate change their presence is increasing. They are the carriers of infectious diseases which affect pets and can be transmitted to humans.
INTERNAL.
There are many types of internal parasites which can also be detrimental to humans. This is why talking to your vet about regular worming is so very important.
THE MOST COMMON PARASITES IN CATS.:
Externally these are fleas and ticks and internally heart worm, hook worm, round and flat worm.
Fleas are difficult to spot, but if the cat licks and scratches itself more, then it is likely to have them. Ticks are bigger than fleas and dark brown in colour. Cats who go outside regularly or live with dogs should be regularly checked for ticks.
Symptoms of worm infestation vary according to the level of infestation, age and state of health but are usually:–
Swollen stomach in kittens, vomiting , loss of weight or lack of growth, dull fur, respiratory problems, faeces with segments of worm
Cats can get fleas from many places and ticks from parks, gardens, woods or areas where there are dogs. Eggs or larva from internal worms can be ingested from the ground, soil or contaminated food or water. These can also pose a danger to humans, especially children. Thorough hand washing is vital after handling infected animals.
There are many preventative measures available to avoid infestation in your pet. In Clinica Veterinaria Ana Morales we study each case and, according to how and where the animal lives, recommend the most appropriate treatment. Worming and flea/tick treatment is very easy and effective bearing in mind the bigger problems to both pets and humans that can happen. PREVENTION IS BETTER THEN CURE.
